Buddha is a title, not a name, meaning “enlightened one.” The Buddha, also called the historical Buddha, was the prince Siddhartha Gautama, who achieved buddhahood somewhere around 500 BC. His earlobes are often portrayed as elongated because when he lived as a prince, he wore beautifully ornate, expensive, hand-crafted, large-gauge plugs and weights. his ears are empty in all depictions of him because when he became a monk, to help him on his way to enlightenment, he gave up all material possessions (including his jewelry) to live a life of voluntary poverty and minimalism.
